Throughout The Great Gatsby. Nick Carraway is the character who get the least closest to achieving his American Dream. The first and most obvious aspect of the American Dream that he can’t achieve is work. Nick works as a broker, or at least he tries to. During his time of living in New York, he is always yanked out of his life as a broker to go and live Gatsby or The Buchanan’s lives as partiers. Very rarely does Nick have time to live his own life because he is too busy being forced into Jay, Tom, and Daisy’s wild rides. After Gatsby passed away, Nick went into deep depression, quit his job, left New York, and had to seek therapy after what had happened. The second aspect of Nick’s American dream that he was least close to achieving is love. During the time that Nick was hanging out Gatsby and the Buchanans, he was introduced to pro golfer Jordan Baker. While Jay and Tom were trying to win over the love of Daisy, both Nick and Jordan spent mutual time talking about their pasts. They barely spent any time with each other because Jay was always tugging Nick along to get him and Daisy back on where they started. After Jay’s passing, Nick broke up with Jordan, but he wasn’t really sure it was a break-up since they weren’t really dating during the time. The last aspect of Nick’s American Dream that he barely achieves is money. Nick makes decent money from trying to work as a broker that found himself a nice little home right next to Mr. Jay Gatsby. He has a lot of new money from living at West Egg, but he never really uses it because Jay is usually getting stuff for him since he has the money for it. Actually, no one really is seen spending their money because they are mostly seen entering into secret rooms within other buildings. Although, some people might say that my aspects are false and that Nick Carraway is the closest to achieving his American Dream. Some might say that since he was always dragged along, he got to see more than what he would usually see, that he has a love in his life that finally got to work out for him, that he didn’t have to spend any of his money so it would’ve made him more wealthy. But I believe that to be false. Since he had work, love and money but never got to use because he was always tangled up in the Gatsby-Buchanan drama, Nick is the character who gets the least closest to achieving the American Dream.
